When The Doctor Directory Is NOT the Right Choice

The Doctor Directory is not the right tool in six specific situations: medical emergencies (call 911), mental health crisis (call or text 988), same-day appointment scheduling (use Zocdoc), prescription refills from your existing doctor (use their patient portal), finding a dentist or nurse practitioner (use Healthgrades for broader provider coverage), or asking for medical advice on a specific condition (call a licensed physician or nurse line). Everything else - finding a verified specialist by name, city, condition, or specialty - we handle well.

⚠ Medical emergency?
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. Do not submit a consultation request and wait for a response. Symptoms that require 911: chest pain, difficulty breathing, sudden weakness or numbness, uncontrolled bleeding, altered consciousness, severe allergic reaction, signs of stroke (face drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty).
⚠ Mental health crisis?
Call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in English and Spanish. Free and confidential.

Six Situations Where a Different Tool Is Better

1. You need an appointment scheduled in the next 24 to 48 hours

Our consultation-request form goes to the practice email and the doctor's owner dashboard. Response times vary. If you need a confirmed appointment slot fast, a real-time booking widget is a better fit.

Use instead: Zocdoc shows live calendar availability across opted-in providers in major metros. For same-day and next-day appointments, Zocdoc wins.

2. You want a prescription refill from your existing doctor

Refills are best handled directly with the practice that wrote the prescription. Most US medical practices offer a patient portal (MyChart, Athena, Kareo, Cerner) for refill requests.

Use instead: Log in to your existing doctor's patient portal or call the practice's refill line. If you have moved and need a new physician, then start with our directory.

3. You are looking for a dentist, chiropractor, or nurse practitioner

The Doctor Directory covers licensed MD and DO physicians only. We do not list dentists (DDS/DMD), chiropractors (DC), nurse practitioners (NP), physician assistants (PA), or optometrists (OD). Our data source, the federal NPI Registry, includes those provider types but we intentionally scope to physicians for consistency.

Use instead: Healthgrades or WebMD Care covers a broader provider mix including non-physician providers.

4. You want medical advice for a specific condition

The Doctor Directory publishes physician profiles and moderated patient reviews. We do not publish medical advice, diagnose conditions, or recommend treatments. Our condition hub pages describe which specialties treat a condition; they do not tell you what to do about your specific case.

Use instead: For advice-level questions, call your existing physician, a nurse triage line (many US insurance plans provide one for free), or a 24/7 telehealth service. For emergencies see the boxes above.

5. You need coverage in a market outside the United States

Our directory covers US-licensed physicians only. We do not list Canadian, UK, European, or other international providers.

Use instead: Country-specific directories or ministry-of-health provider databases in your target country.

6. You are researching your own doctor before an existing appointment

This is technically the right tool - our profiles show credentials, reviews, and location. But if you already have the appointment scheduled, the most useful research source is often your appointment confirmation, your insurance card (for accepted-plan verification), and a call to the practice's front desk.

Use instead: The Doctor Directory works here too, but the practice's own front desk answers scheduling and insurance questions faster.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I not use The Doctor Directory?

Six situations: (1) medical emergencies - call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room; (2) mental health crisis - call or text 988; (3) same-day or next-day scheduling - use Zocdoc which shows live calendar availability; (4) prescription refills or telehealth from an existing doctor - use your existing doctor's patient portal; (5) finding a dentist, chiropractor, or nurse practitioner - use Healthgrades which covers a broader provider mix; (6) medical advice for a specific condition - call a licensed physician or nurse line.

Is The Doctor Directory a replacement for calling 911?

No. The Doctor Directory is a directory of physicians for non-emergency care research and consultation. For life-threatening symptoms including chest pain, difficulty breathing, sudden weakness, uncontrolled bleeding, or altered consciousness, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately. Do not submit a consultation request and wait.

When is Zocdoc a better choice than The Doctor Directory?

Zocdoc is the better choice when you need a routine visit scheduled in the next 24 to 48 hours, live in a major metro where Zocdoc has dense provider coverage, and want to filter live against your specific insurance plan at the booking step. Zocdoc's real-time calendar is faster for that use case than our consultation-request form.
